What is normal teen behavior?

The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) has specified the following as typical teen behavior:

Changes in appearance
Some withdrawal from family
Increased arguments
Emotional Ups and Downs
Experimentation with drugs or alcohol (not dependency)

What is not normal - when is placement appropriate?

Sometimes we will get referrals from parole officers, school counselors, therapists, and church groups. If one of these referred you - it's probably time to take action. Your teen may be involved with things you are not aware of, but someone else is aware of the problem.

Some of the common themes and situations we deal with include:

Suspension or expulsion from private or public school
Failing in school for various reasons - learning disabilities, behavior disorders, etc
Depressed Teens or those with suicidal thoughts
Other mental health issues or disorders such as eating disorders, bipolar, AD/HD, and ODD
Stress, anxiety, and other factors
Violent teens - toward siblings, parents, teachers, and others
Those involved with gangs, shoplifting, weapons
Runaways and teens that stay out all night or consistently breaking curfew
Alcohol and drug abuse and addiction
